Our Campus

Herring Gut Coastal Science Center’s Port Clyde campus sprawls across the southern tip of the St. George Peninsula on Muscongus Bay. Classrooms, labs, an aquaponic greenhouse, and a historic lobster pound make Herring Gut Coastal Science Center a Midcoast destination.

Main Building and Greenhouse

The main building of the campus houses classrooms and meeting spaces, administrative and educator offices, an aquaponics greenhouse, and lab space. The aquaponics greenhouse is a teaching tool that educates visitors and students about the importance of aquaponics. This system allows for year-round production of produce that gains nutrients provided by the tilapia in neighboring tanks.

Lower Classroom & Saltwater Lab

Just down the hill is the Center’s additional classroom space and Saltwater Lab. This lower classroom provides the perfect view for any marine learning environment. For many years students operated the Teel Cove Student Shellfish Coop out of the Saltwater Lab. The Saltwater Lab is currently being renovated for aquaculture education, marine research, and virtual learning experiences. Expected completion date for this exciting project is 2022!

Marshall Point Sea Farm and Historic Lobster Pound

In 2010, the Marshall Point Sea Farm became part of the Herring Gut campus. Formerly a commercial scale shellfish production hatchery, this sea farm sits next to a bait shack and historic lobster pound. The bait shack and lobster pound offer waterfront access for aquaculture education at Herring Gut Coastal Science Center.
