Aquaponics is the cultivation of plants and aquatic animals in a re-circulating environment. A combination of aquaculture and hydroponics, aquaponics pairs fish and plants in one integrated system. Fish waste provides a food source for the growing plants and the plants provide a natural filter for the water the fish live in. This creates a sustainable ecosystem where both plants and fish can thrive.
The workshop includes: 2.5 days of hands-on teacher training in aquaponics using Herring Gut's small-scale commercial aquaponics greenhouse and hatchery as your laboratory; a complete classroom aquaponics kit including tank, filter, pumps, planting materials and an operating manual; standards-based aquaponics curriculum materials that will engage and motive your students; 1.5 CEU's available through USM or 15 contact/professional development hours.
At the workshop you will:
• Learn about the business of aquaponics and its role in feeding our growing population.
• Explore the many ways aquaponics can be easily integrated into your science classes to meet content standards.
• Participate in hands-on lessons and experiments that use aquaponics to demonstrate water and nitrogen cycles, plant biology, fish anatomy, math, chemistry and ecology to your students.
• Set up and take home your own classroom aquaponics kit – a complete re-circulating aquaculture system with tank, filters, pumps and planting media that will change the way you teach science.
• Enjoy a relaxing and informative nature cruise on Muscongus Bay
Your instructor will be Ann Boover, Herring Gut's Aquaculture Specialist and Teacher. Ann instructs middle and high school students in aquaponics classes and has developed an extensive curriculum of hands-on lessons
that incorporates science, math, business, and language arts into hatchery and greenhouse management.

Tuition includes breakfast and lunch daily and optional housing in a rustic farmhouse on Herring Gut's waterfront campus in Port Clyde. Classes and activities are balanced with time to enjoy the village and surrounding area. Restaurants, art galleries, a lighthouse, and kayak tours are all within walking distance of the campus.
