ABC Program Visits Commercial Kelp Nursery
On Monday October 15th, Herring Gut Learning Center's collaboration with the 9th grade high school class "Adventures Beyond the Classroom" kicked off with a visit to Ocean Approved's kelp nursery at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland. The ABC class will be working monthly with Herring Gut educators on projects related to issues in the Gulf of Maine, including growing kelp. In recent years, Maine has developed a reputation as a leader in the burgeoning United States kelp aquaculture industry. Ocean Approved is the first commercial kelp farm in the United States, growing delicious sea vegetables that have more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, and more fiber than brown rice. School of Roots Students Wow Audience at Conservation Fair
On Thursday, September 27th, School of Roots students gave presentations to over 500 elementary school students at the Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District Conservation Fair. SOR students were the only student presenters at the fair and gave presentations on different aquaponics topics. Topics included fish anatomy, the cycle of aquaponics, aquaponics systems, elements important to aquaponics, and water testing. The Herring Gut booth was a hit with the fairgoers and students and teachers alike were impressed with the knowledge and maturity of our students. Congratulations on a job well done! Read more...

Another Successful Year for First Work Experience
As a beautiful summer comes to a close, so too does Herring Gut's second year of the First Work Experience for young teens. This summer, 20 students from R.S.U. #13 were hired by Herring Gut to maintain the aquaponics greenhouse, grow vegetables in raised bed gardens, run a weekly Community Market, and give public tours of the grounds. For many of these students, it was their first job and an opportunity to learn teamwork, responsibility, and good work habits. Read more...

A Seal Story Hour visits Herring Gut Learning Center
On the morning of Wednesday, August 15th, Herring Gut Learning Center teamed up once again with Jackson Memorial Library to bring the Library's weekly story time to the shore. A group of enthusiastic story hour attendees joined Jackson Memorial Library's Assistant Director Samantha Cote and Herring Gut Learning Center Intern Katie Gloede for a reading of the famous "Andre the Seal", marine-themed songs and stories, and a create-your-own-seal craft.
