Summer 2012 Events: Salt Water Science Family Series & Community Market
Summer is a great time to explore the Maine coast and learn about marine ecology. Please join us as Herring Gut presents a series of fun and informative, hands-on activities in July and August to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.
The Family Night Salt Water Series will feature the following events:
Tuesday, July 24, 2012 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sue "Seabird" Schubel is an outreach educator for the Maine Audobon, one of Maine's leading naturalists and winner of the Disney Conservation Hero award. She will present hands-on activities that introduce families to Maine's rich ecology and the Audobon's Seabird Restoration Program
Tuesday, July 31, 2012 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. The Good, the Bad, the Beautiful - Crabs. An up-close, hands-on look at the many kinds of crabs found in Maine, the environmental impact of invasive species and why horseshoe crabs aren't actually crabs at all.
Tuesday, August 7, 2012 8:30 - 10:00 p.m. Night Time Beach Walk - bring your flashlights! Learn what sea creatures do at the beach when the sun goes down. A family night time walk-and-talk to Drift In Beach in Port Clyde.
Tuesday, August 14, 2012 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. The Marvelous and Mysterious Maine Lobster - hands-on activities about Maine's most famous crustacean, from the tiny larval stage to the centerpiece of the dinner plate. Historical facts, myths and the future of the industry.
All events are free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No registration needed.
Also this summer, Herring Gut will once again host a weekly Community Market , featuring fresh herbs and vegetables grown by our First Work Experience Summer Gardeners and goods from Bittersweet Heritage Farm. Tours of Herring Gut's campus will also be offered by the gardeners throughout the Markets.
