Director
Description
The Director provides leadership and overall management direction of the Herring Gut Learning Center to ensure compliance of Board directives and the Trust agreement. Guidance and direction is provided by the Board of Directors and Advisory Committees.
Responsibilities
- Provides leadership in meeting day-to-day instructional, operational, and administrative needs of the Herring Gut Learning Center.
- Evaluates the center’s educational programs, and assists with the development of a written, career-oriented curriculum with activities centered on aquaculture and aligned with the Maine Learning Results.
- Oversees the development and implementation of new educational programs for alternative education, gifted and talented, home-schooled, and out-reach students.
- Develops and implements marketing strategies to ensure the growth and stability of the Herring Gut Learning Center.
- Facilitates the work of the Board of Directors, and its committees, by developing resource materials and providing appropriate reports and information as necessary.
- Participates with the Board in developing and implementing a strategic plan and provides advice in setting policies that guide the organization.
- Oversees the administrative/financial responsibilities of the organization that includes the acquisition of funding, development of budgets, and compliance with approved budgets.
- Develops positive community relationships by organizing, presenting, and attending “in-house” functions, community events, and conferences, and nurtures existing relationships with students, teachers, school administrators, industry members, and partnering organizations.
- Communicates with supporters, school administrators, community leaders, and politicians in order to keep them informed of the organization’s needs and accomplishments.
- Develops and maintains records for safe, effective, and efficient operation of the facility and its programs.
- Performs managerial/human resources duties for interviewing/hiring applicants for employment; assigning performance tasks; reviewing/evaluating progress of assignments by written review annually or as needed; and maintaining the security/confidentiality of all records.
- Works flexible hours including evenings and weekends when required.
- Other tasks to be assigned as needed.
Professional Skills
- Experience managing a non-profit organization that is education-based.
- Proven leadership skills including management techniques that motivate staff to perform at the highest standards.
- Self-motivated, hard-working, and able to function independently with minimal supervision, plus demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Must possess problem-solving, decision-making, and creative thinking abilities.
- Proven track record of development experience and fundraising success.
- Established knowledge of nonprofit accounting and administration.
- Experience in developing and instructing innovative environmental science programs and familiarity with the Maine Learning Results.
- Highly organized with effective written and oral communication skills.
- Proficient with personal computers including word-processing, spreadsheet, and accounting software.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree; advanced degree preferred
- 4 years management experience in non-profit organization

Maine Conservation Corps Americorps Environmental Educator
Position Description
Herring Gut Learning Center seeks an enthusiastic environmental educator to assist in the development and instruction of our marine science and aquaculture outreach and summer camp programs; and for the acquisition, care, and maintenance of the marine specimens necessary to implement these programs and activities. This opportunity is available through the Maine Conservation Corps' Americorps Environmental Educator Program. The position is from January 7, 2009 until November 14, 2009.
Responsibilities
- Gain a working knowledge of HGLC’s current summer and outreach program curriculum in order to:
- Research and develop new summer and outreach program curriculum on a variety of marine-related topics.
- Continue with and establish new working relationships with local residents who have offered their property as field sites for various HGLC outreach and summer programs.
- Maintain visibility and strengthen the image of the Herring Gut Learning Center by serving as a community resource for marine science information and promoting HGLC’s programs through various community relation activities.
- Present outreach programs to school students, the general public, and other community groups either on-site, at schools and/or community buildings, or in the field at a number of locations in mid-coast Maine.
- Instruct daily summer camp programs during July and August for children ages 5
to 13.
- Transport participants and lead field studies at various locations in and around Port Clyde. Supervise summer intern and program volunteers while in the field.
- Ensure that all supplies necessary for outreach and summer programs are acquired, organized, and maintained in good working order.
- Assist as necessary with the selection and maintenance of HGLC’s live animal collections and aquaculture systems.
Professional Skills
- Bachelors Degree or enrolled in environmental education/marine biology or a related field; or equivalent training and knowledge, preferably with teaching experience.
- Experience working with children.
- Comfortable speaking in front of groups of both children and adults.
- Sincere concern for the environment.
- Strong writing, organizational, problem solving, teaching, and computer skills.
- Ability to live on-site in Port Clyde; willingness to work irregular hours, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team player.
- Ability to work outside.
